Western Pecan Grower's Association 40th Anniversary Winning Pecan Recipes
What is truly great about this book is that it is so much more than a cookbook. In their own way, recipes offer glimpses into the traditions of families, cultures, and larger societies. They are often passed down from generation to generation, recorded in books, thus preserving styles of food preparation as a building block for the future. This collection of winning recipes from the forty years of the Western Pecan Growers Food Fantasy competition are an homage to the people of the Mesilla Valley that grow pecans, and the people that have used them.
As part of the larger Western Pecan Growers Association trade fair, the Pecan Food Fantasy gathers locals and their favorite recipes and pits them in culinary competition with each other. Every imaginable food item is represented in this competition, and the book includes winning recipes from all categories. The hitch is that every recipe must include pecans, and the variety is impressive. There are a number of traditional pecan pies and pecan pralines, but there are also recipes for Beef Broccoli Pecan Wellington and Pecan a la King Crab Enchiladas. Finally, this one volume offers 40 years worth of winners from an area that definitely knows what to do with its pecans.
This cookbook is available for $15 purchase at the Doña Ana Extension Office and other area sites. For more information, call (505) 525-6649.
