Moonshine Is Better With Two Moons By Jillian A. Mills Photography courtesy of Dos Lunas
Some might tell you that “Dos Lunas” is translated to mean “Two Moons”, while those who have tried this new super-premium tequila brand seem to have various definitions from “Excellent” to “It’s about time!” The truth is tequila has taken a backseat to other types of distilled spirits for some time. However, thanks to El Paso’s own Richard Poe, tequila (formerly the Rodney Dangerfield of liquors) is finally getting the respect is deserves.
So, what makes Dos Lunas so different from other tequilas on the market? Frankly, a lot! First, Dos Lunas is made from one hundred percent Weber Blue Agave plants that are grown on a ranch named Agua Escondido located near the village of Zapotlanejo, Jalisco, in the highlands of Mexico’s official tequila region. Here, according to the strict regulations set forth by the Tequila Regulatory Council, the product is distilled and bottled. Richard actually goes a step further and insists that the tequila is double distilled and bottled immediately thereafter. Dos Lunas is also set apart from other premium brands because it is completely chemical free and one hundred percent natural. This means that it contains no glycerin, and no enzymes were used in its production. If you believe that “good things come to those who wait,” then you will certainly appreciate the fermentation process utilized by Dos Lunas. They use natural yeast as opposed to the ever-popular chemical fermentation. This can translate to five hundred percent more time required for the product to ferment than competing products utilizing chemical fermentation. While chemical fermentation is fast and efficient, it takes away considerably from the quality of the final product.
Dos Lunas currently offers two tequila types, Dos Lunas Silver and Dos Lunas Reposado. Both varieties have won awards from the Beverage Tasting Institute. Dos Lunas Tequila Silver was awarded the Bronze Medal for its hints of charred tropical fruits, honey, whipped cream and peppery spices. Dos Lunas Tequila Reposado drew even higher praise receiving the Gold Medal for its flavors of coconut cream, white chocolate and sweet spice flavors. Accolades such as these for a product so new to the market are a testament to Richard’s attention to detail and demand for quality above and beyond the standard.
Currently, Dos Lunas is available in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and Wisconsin. However, it is expected to be available nationwide by September of 2007. As further good news, Dos Lunas will be launching a third tequila type, Anejo, in select markets in the summer of 2007, so be sure to keep an eye out for it!
